Go-Ride sessions at Wordsley School Coaches experiences – 1 Tim Goodall

On the 7th February I led my first coaching session at Ham Dingle Primary School in Pedmore as part of my practical experience for the Level 2 Coaching Certificate. Terry Rowntree was on hand to help run the session which was of a great help and much appreciated. It was a great success with the children loving it, well thats what they said anyway and judging by their screams it was probably the case.

Their were six girls and two boys all of varying abilities, but they all had one thing in common and that was heaps of enthusiasm. It was very refreshing to see and hugely satisfying. It was one of four sessions, which will resume on a weekly basis after their half term.

Update - May 2007: I have done for out of six sessions as part of my coaching experience, the other two of which I am in the process of planning.

Coaching

Our Coaches

We are currently on the lookout for 2 new coaches. Tasks will include assisting in the organisation of the Go-Ride coaching sessions during the schools summer term, assisting in the Go-Ride follow-up rides, mentoring our young riders, offering advice to all other club members.

Qualifications: You will need to undertake the BC coaches course to a minimum of level 2, course fees will be met by the club. A first aid certificate has to be obtained in addition.

Anybody keen to join our coaches can contact any coach or the General Secretary.

Coaching update September 2009

2009 coaching has now finished, there were 9 sessions during the summer held at Wordsley school and once again have been very successful. Grass track racing formed a large part of the sessions plus rides in the woods behind which were the participants favourite part of the evening. Riders who attended regularly made huge improvements in both their fitness and skill levels which was clearly evident, with some riders showing excellent bike handling and determination to be the fastest around the grass track.

21 New children attending and 4 returning from the year before.

There have been several follow up rides that have had between 4 and 9 people on. All of these have been starting on selected Saturdays from the Bonded Warehouse.

2 of the Go Ride children have now successfully been out on proper club runs.

We are now planning to recruit 2 more coaches, update the CRB checks and first aid training. A key milestone is to get club mark accreditation (something the committee is now pushing).

More follow up rides will come, a new parental consent form will allow better flexibility in getting children out and we are planning on how to integrate young people successfully into club rides.

We are now about to start laying the foundations for next years activities, details of which will follow shortly, but are certainly going to be exciting!!!

A big thank you to everyone involved in the delivery of the sessions and the support from club members and parents alike.

The Go-Ride attendees came to a presentation evening held at the Oakfield Centre on Monday September 28th.

Here all riders were presented with a certificate for their achievements and a small prize.

Coaches experiences – 2 Kevin Payton

>Just a note to let members of the club know that Tim, Matt and my self successfully passed our level 2 coaching practical assessment on Sat 27th Jan and have submitted our written course work for examination.

Hopefully we should get confirmation of the results in the next eight weeks.

The work load was much more than I expected. The suggested learning programme involved three days of study / assessment in Worcester plus home assignments and coaching practice totalling 94 hours which meant working well after midnight on several occasions. This is in addition to the three day first aid course.

For me the course has been both challenging and demanding but very rewarding. I have particularly enjoyed the practical sessions with young people and am hopeful that through their increased awareness of the sport they may in the future be looking for club membership.

The club will be looking to put on courses to attract youngsters and a number of plans are being pursued.

I would like to thank the club for their support in this venture and hope we can all enjoy the benefits.
