Mildenhall Rally

Friday evening of the Bank holiday saw members of the club trekking in pouring rain across the A14 to Mildenhall in Suffolk for their clubs annual rally.

Saturday morning dawned fair weather and Isla and Kevin set off to do the 100Km  Audax event at a steady 19mph around picturesque countryside in time to arrive back at the Rally ground to spectate the grass track racing in the afternoon. Tom Payton was all set to race when they arrived back. He gave good performances in a series of events throughout the afternoon to accumulate points and win the Junior Omnium event.

On Sunday morning Sue was up early to compete in the Duathlon, a run  of 5k followed by a 23k cycle and another 5k run- a comfortable effort. Sue’s event was followed by Hannah competing in the children’s Duathlon to finish 1st girl and fifth overall and then Thomas who was second in his event.

The trade show opened at 10.30 with the Isla bike stand looking good. The Rowntree gang managed the stand with the help of Tim Goodall and Tom Payton.

Sunday evening saw the Pub Quiz-two teams entered gaining second and third places.

Monday was the highlight of the weekend for the Stourbridge with the Cyclo-cross events.

Hannah was first off in the under 12’s event. The course took her around the Rally ground and then out into woodland, which was very sticky from the previous night’s rain. She had another commanding win in the girl’s event and third overall.

Hannah then partnered with her friend from Hull City Road Club to ride the Mad Madison Cyclo-cross along with Tom and his partner Theo Brumhead and Kevin and Isla. A brilliant event ensued with 40 teams and 40 minutes of very serious competitive racing. Partners raced alternate laps with a change over in the Arena in front of a large supportive crowd of spectators. All three teams had good races. Kevin and Isla getting a 5th place overall, Tom and Theo gaining 7th and Hannah and  Jodie not showing themselves up against competent adult riders to get a 25th position. This ride we were very proud of, requiring capable skills in the stampede start and later bike handling.

All in  all a super weekend.

Mildenhall C.C. do a fantastic job organizing the weekend. Perhaps others would like to join us next year.
