More SCC riders competing!

2009 has seen a number of our riders competing in road races for the first time: Richard Coleman, Keith Green, Warren Neate, Dave Payne, Chris Halford have all taken out licences and put them to good use. Results have been good, testament to the variety of rides we have on offer. The winter and summer training rides have been a good contributor to these performances.

Introductory Rides start 14th June

Introductory - slow cycle ride. Starting Sunday 14th June, meet West Hagley Community Centre car park. Social ride for novices , new members, guest riders, the not so fit and older riders. Especially suitable for Parents accompanying children ( minimum age 12 ). Its for those who want to extend their cycling experience “on road”, so they can bridge the fitness gap and progress onto our other longer Club rides. Contact Terry Rowntree.

National Bike Week - SCC at The Bonded Warehouse 13th June

We will be making a contribution to National Bike Week (13th - 21st June) by joining with Dudley Councils' cycling unit and Sustrans to promote cycling at The Bonded warehouse. We will be hosting on and off-road rides from 9.30am - volunteer helpers will be welcome - Go-Ride sessions for youngsters, roller racing, a display of bikes and stands with our own publicity.

Isla and Louise are leaving us!

Isla and Louise will be leaving the area this summer so as a celebration of their time with SCC, they will lead a farewell ride to be held on Sunday 28th June 2009.

Meet normal Sunday meeting place, Stourbridge Ring Road/Hagley Road, at 8.30. The ride will be a magical mystery tour to Birmingham. The route is 95% light off-road, a little canal but mostly paths you never knew were there.. All SCC members are welcome, the route is ideal for ‘cross bikes, but mountain bikes will be fine, as will road bikes, providing they are fitted with sturdy tyres. Back 1.00 to 1.30

"Interesting" Bikes night 16th March

Some members brought their "special bikes along for all to view on clubnight. These were presented in a line with the exhibitors describing their trusty steeds. First off was carol Rowntree with her 1940's shopper, complete with basket and rust. Next was Isla with her 1992 prototype which was built as a "get to work" bike. Made from 531, racks front and rear, mudguards, chunky tyres. A nice roller but never made production. Jamie showed off his machine that was rescued from scrap heap, very nicely built considering its history! Next in line was Louises mountain bike she rode in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, complete with her race number and tags. Designed by Isla, built by Raleigh.

Terrys Pashley was next, a replica from a 1930's design, with a photograph of Uncle Jack Rowntree alonside a similar machine. Sturmey Archer hub gears, Brooks leather saddle, nice big fat tyres, what more could you desire? Stefan was showing off his new Isaac TT bike, with carbon everything, incontrast with Terry's bike. There was a George Longstaff tandem next, with a kiddyback, used by the Paytons for the last 10 years, a splendid specimen. Then was Ians mtb, bought for £30 and lovingly restored, and used for the last few years. Kevins Mercian track bike was also on display, very retro but also beautifully original. Last to be seen was Bruce Mantoms folder which is a rebadged Dahon - with Dawes insiginia. Bruce demonstrated it's speedy construction and detatchable pedals. A very worthwhile experimental "Interesting Bikes" night bound to be repated in the future.

Roller Racing

The finale was held at the clubroom on Monday 9th March, this time we only had 4 contenders, the overall winner was Robin Smith, with Kevin Payton runner-up. This was great entertainment during the winter months, causing some real pain to the competitiors.

2009 AGM

The AGM was run without controversy and the 2008 committee was re-elected. Trophies presented were: The Cyclo-Cross Trophy awarded to Hannah Payton for gaining most points (1st - 6th) in BC 'cross events during the winter, Isla Rowntree 2nd, Kevin Payton 3rd. Club Member of the Year was awarded to Matt Bowker for his efforts to make the Go-Ride scheme a success, including organising extra rides for our young newcomers and for successfully completing his coaches course. Wag's Kup was presented to Bob Smith for the silliest mistake of the year. Bob arrived for a cycling holiday in Spain and produced out of his case 2 left shoes: one red, one yellow, one spd and one Look! Congratulations to Bryan Hedges who was made a life member.

Roy Archer

We are saddened to report the death of Roy Archer who passed away after an illness on 22nd February 2009. Roy was a stalwart, founder member of SCC, well known as a CTT (RTTC) timekeeper. Funeral will be on 6th March at 1145 at Stourbridge Crematorium.

February snow

There was a shift from early season road riding for the "week of snow" in early February where the Beacon Audaxes were cancelled so some of our riders joined the off-road groups and rode some of the bridleways over Clent and the surrounding Stourbridge area. See our image gallery.

SCC successes in the West Midlands Cyco-cross league.

Once again, Hannah Payton showed her superiority to the field of youths at Aldersley on Sunday 25th Jan. She won her category by a good margin demonstrating her off-road skills. Likewise Isla Rowntree stormed to a victory in the ladies race finishing in the top 10 of the mens vets race, despite having a 2-minute handicap dished out to the ladies at the start. Kevin Payton also had a good ride finishing 5th in the vets race and Roger Allen 14th. Jackso McCann made an appearance and added to the orange visibility in the race, finishing about 1/2 way down the field on a very testing course.

National Series cyclo-cross 18th January 2009

Hannah Payton wrapped up the National Series Cyclo-cross with a well deserved 2nd place, beaten by Beth Crumpton of Halesowen A & CC. Hannah was the victim of a crash at the start of the race and was held up while her opponents escaped.

Isla Rowntree also had a good ride in the ladies event and finished in 2nd place.
